Singapore-based Geniebook’s personalized learning platform raises $16.6M Series A

Most of Geniebook’s students are based in Singapore and Vietnam, and it plans to use part of its funding to continue growing in those markets before focusing on other Southeast Asian countries. The startup’s Series A brings its total raised to about $18 million. Geniebook’s last round of funding was a $1.1 million pre-Series A round in 2019 from Apricot Capital.

The online learning platform says that it has seen a 2000% revenue growth since 2019, having onboarded over 150,000 students across Southeast Asia. Geniebook’s headcount also grew fivefold in the same timeframe, employing 350 people mostly for its curriculum and engineering teams across its regional offices.

The funds will be used to improve existing products. The edtech startup has 3 products, GenieSmart, worksheets personalised by artificial intelligence; GenieClass, live and recorded classes; and GenieAsk, a real-time teacher chat.

"We are excited to back Neo Zhizhong and Alicia Cheong who have been tutoring for the past 10 years and who have built a successful offline tutoring business prior to Geniebook," said Dev Khare, partner at Lightspeed.

Geniebook, a Singapore-headquartered edutech startup, has secured US$16.6 million in a Series A financing round co-led by East Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Individuals, who participated in the round, include Dunce Capital’s John Danner, Unacademy’s Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini, Snapdeal’s Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal and other senior executives from Southeast Asia’s unicorns such as Grab, Shopee, and Gojek.

It also operates GenieClass, which lets students learn from teachers via live online classes, and GenieAsk, which allows students to chat with and receive help from teachers in real time.
