Grammar And Comprehension

In this lesson, we will learn about: singular and plural nouns. 

Before that, a quick summary of nouns & comprehension cloze:

  • There are many types of words, and nouns are one of them. 
    • Nouns are people/places/objects, but not all of them can be seen or touched.
    • Proper nouns are names of things, and start with capital letters.
       
  • Comprehension cloze: a short passage with blanks.
    • Each blank will have the first or first two letters as a clue. 
    • Fill in the blank with the correct word.

 

Question 1: 

Identify the noun in the following sentence: 

That’s an old book!

  1. That’s
  2. an
  3. old
  4. book

Answer:

4) book

Explanation:

The correct answer is (4) book. Old is a description. 

 

Question 2: 

One of the following words is a proper noun that needs to be capitalised. Identify that word. 

My neighbour, todoro, is not from this country. 

  1. neighbour
  2. todoro
  3. this 
  4. country

Answer:

2) todoro

Explanation:

Proper noun is a name. The name that is not capitalised here is todoro. The correct answer is (2) todoro

 

Question 3: 

Odd one out: The following is a list of nouns, except one of them isn’t! Which word doesn’t belong?

Mug Squirrel

Computer Jelly

Confused Mattress

 

  1. Mug
  2. Confused
  3. Squirrel
  4. Mattress

(Hint: Noun is a thing/object.)

Answer:

2) Confused

Explanation:

Mug and mattress are objects, and squirrel is an animal; all these are nouns. Confused is a feeling, so it’s not a noun. Correct answer is (2) Confused.

Explanation:

If you are finding it difficult to choose between monday and morning, remember that monday is a proper noun. It will start with a capital letter - Monday. So the correct answer is (1) morning.

English concept: Singular and plural nouns

  • Singular means “one”, plural means “many”,
  • Examples of singular and plural nouns:
    • One book, many books
    • One box, many boxes (words ending with x, add es instead of just s)
    • One woman, many women
    • One child, many children

English concept: Slightly special plural nouns

  • Regular nouns - Just add s or es at the end to form plural.
  • Irregular nouns - These nouns require you to change the spelling a little:
    • Knife - Knives
    • Mouse - Mice
    • Tooth - Teeth

(Professional: a person who is able to do their job well.)

Answer: 

1) knives

Explanation:

There are no such words as knive and knifes. Knife is singular, so that's ruled out too. The correct answer is (1) knives, as it is plural.

 

Question 8: 

Odd one out: The following is a list of regular nouns, except one of them isn’t; which word doesn’t belong?

Scooter          Child          Phone          Field

  1. Scooter
  2. Child
  3. Phone
  4. Field 

Answer: 

2) Child

Explanation:

Scooter, phone and field are regular nouns, as their plural form is scooters, phones and fields. So the correct answer is (2) child, as it is an irregular noun with its plural form - children.

The word comprehension means understanding. This section will test your understanding. 

  • You will be given a short story to read.
  • You will have to answer some questions based on the story.

You must be able to understand/comprehend both the story and the questions. 


Question 9:

Morfiyus woke up early one day to make a card for his mother. It wasn't her birthday and it wasn’t Mother’s Day. Morfiyus just felt like doing something nice for her. 

An hour later, when his mother woke up, Morfiyus gave her the card and hugged her. His mother was elated. 

(Elated: very happy.)

Why was Morfiyus’ mother elated?

  1. She was happy that Morfiyus bought her a gift.
  2. She was happy that Morfiyus did something nice for her.
  3. She was happy that Morfiyus was up early.
  4. She was happy because the stickers were cute.

Answer: 

2) She was happy that Morfiyus did something nice for her.

Explanation:

There is no mention of a gift or sticker in the story. So options 1 and 4 are out. There is no mention of mothers' feelings about Morfiyus waking up early. So the correct answer is (2) She was happy that Morfiyus did something nice for her.
 

Question 10: 

Morfiyus woke up early one day to make a card for his mother. It wasn't her birthday and it wasn't mother's day. Morfiyus just felt like doing something nice for her.
