Practice Questions

Passage 1

Read the passage and identify if the following statement about the passage is true or false.

Jill lived in a dilapidated house with her old parents. Her parents were farmers and they would often have to toil in the fields every day. If they did not work in the fields, they would not be able to harvest fresh ingredients for sale at the nearby markets. She always blamed her parents for her hard life.

One day, as she was working in the fields with her parents, a friend walked past her.

“Oh, I didn’t know you were a farmer,” she said.

“I am not a farmer. I am just helping this old couple out,” Jill replied.

Her parents were disheartened upon hearing her reply. They knew that without hard-working farmers, such as themselves, many people would not be able to purchase fresh produce. They could not understand why she was ashamed of being a farmer.

For as long as I can remember, my mother has always taken me grocery shopping. Every week, my mother would insist that I accompany her on her visits to the nearby supermarket to buy groceries. When I was younger, these weekly trips were painful to me. I found absolutely no joy walking alongside my mother as she picked the freshest meats, seafood, fruits and vegetables for our family to enjoy. Now that I am older, I realise how ungrateful I was for my mother.

Those visits to the supermarket were our time. My mother would always get a shopping cart and let me sit inside it while it was empty. She would then wheel me down the many aisles. When she saw an item she would get excited about, she would refer to a handwritten list she always had in her hands. If it was not on the list, she would decide that we did not need it. I found those trips boring as I never got anything I wanted.
