A New Chapter for Post-Secondary Admissions

A New Chapter for Post-Secondary Admissions

The way students apply to post-secondary institutions is facing a major overhaul. Parents will likely still debate the ranking of polytechnics in Singapore. The process itself is fundamentally changing.

Starting from 2028, the separate application exercises for Junior Colleges, polytechnics and ITE will merge into a single platform called the Post-Secondary Admission Exercise (PSE). For the current cohort of secondary 3 students, this is the exact system they will use to chart their future.

Beyond the ranking of polytechnics in Singapore: A focus on aptitude

Learning is hard. We understand parents and students agonise over cut-off points and rankings. The new PSE signals a broader shift towards recognising aptitude and interest over raw academic scores.

Think of the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE), which allows students to secure a spot in a polytechnic based on passion and talent before final exams. Students who receive a confirmed offer through EAE or Direct School Admission (DSA) will bypass the PSE. This reinforces a clear message. When you find the right fit early, the system honours that commitment.

With a single application portal covering all polytechnics in Singapore, students can explore a wider range of options. It prompts a healthier question. Instead of asking which are the top polytechnics in Singapore, we should ask which course is the best fit for our child's strengths. We believe every student is capable of finding a path that inspires them.

The SEC exam and new timelines: What to expect

The new admission system runs in tandem with a new national examination. From 2027, the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) will replace the [O and N Levels]. This introduces a significant shift in the examination schedule.

Staggered papers: Written exams for English and Mother Tongue will take place in the second week of September. This is a full month before other subjects begin in October. It gives students more breathing room to stay on track.

Results and application window: SEC results will be released in mid-January 2028. Immediately following this, the PSE portal will open. Students can submit 12 choices across Junior Colleges, Millennia Institute, polytechnics and ITE.

Strategising your 12 choices: A practical guide

The unified system offers incredible flexibility but requires strategic planning. Simply looking up a ranking of polytechnics in Singapore is no longer enough. Need help to keep on track? Here is a strategic checklist.

Research courses, not just institutions: Dive deep into specific diploma programmes. A specific course at one polytechnic might hold a better industry reputation than a similar one at a higher-ranked school.

Align with aptitude: Much like the EAE, the new system encourages following the flair shown in CCAs or personal projects.

Balance your list: Your 12 slots should be a mix of reach, match and safety net choices. You can now list a competitive Junior College science stream and a sought-after polytechnic diploma in a single submission.

Understand bonus points: CCAs performance and passing Higher Mother Tongue can provide bonus points. This is a small margin that makes a huge difference in a competitive environment.

Preparing your child for this new landscape means focusing on building genuine interest and a solid academic foundation. We observe that some students struggle with these transitions. We are right beside you to help them take charge of their learning and overcome these new challenges. It is about readiness for a system that asks not just how well they scored but where they will thrive.
