Primary 1

Overview

Primary 1 marks the beginning of a six-year compulsory Primary education for all students in Singapore. Students are introduced to the basics of the English Language and Mathematics, as well as the importance of character development through Character and Citizenship Education and co-curricular activities. To help students ease into the formal schooling system, there’ll be no examinations or formal assessments. Instead, students are evaluated through non-weighted assessments, which allow teachers to track progress and provide additional support where useful. For students who can benefit from additional support, Learning Support Programmes (LSP) are available to help with the strengthening of literacy and numeracy skills.

English

The Primary 1 English syllabus focuses on building a solid linguistic foundation in the key areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. For starters, students are introduced to the basic building blocks of the English Language: spelling, grammar, and punctuation rules, as well as basic reading and writing techniques that allow them to organise and communicate ideas in proper sentences. This is achieved through a combination of exercises that develop their ability to identify the main features of a text and retell the story or share their opinions through speaking and writing.

Maths

The Primary 1 Mathematics syllabus is designed to lay a strong foundation for more complex and advanced concepts. The syllabus can be broadly divided into 3 categories: Numbers and Algebra, Measurements and Geometry, and Statistics. Each category consists of topics and concepts designed to help students develop their thinking, reasoning, and communication skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving. Under Numbers, students will start with simple counting (up to 100) before moving on to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For Measurement and Geometry, students will learn about shapes, length, time, and money. Lastly, under Statistics, students will learn to read and interpret data from picture graphs.
