Always read your answers again and ask yourself if it makes sense.

Practice Questions

Question 1:

Elsa is intelligent. Her sister Anna is intelligent.

__________ and __________.

  1. Elsa and her sister, Anna, is intelligent.
  2. Elsa and her sister, Anna, are intelligent.
  3. Elsa and her sister is intelligent.
  4. Elsa and her sister are intelligent.

Answer:

(2) Elsa and her sister, Anna, are intelligent.

Explanation:

We need to combine the two sentences provided without removing or missing out on any information. In Options (3) and (4), the name of the sister - Anna, is not provided. Option (1) is also incorrect, because with a plural subject - Elsa and her sister Anna - we need to use a plural verb. Therefore, the correct answer to this question is Option (2).

Question 2:

Mr Siva is old. Mr Siva is wise.

__________ both __________.

  1. Mr Siva is both old and wise.
  2. Both Mr Siva is old and wise.
  3. Mr Siva is old and both wise.
  4. Both old and wise are Mr Siva.

Answer:

(1) Mr Siva is both old and wise.

Explanation:

The correct answer to this question is Option (1) - Mr Siva is both old and wise.

Question 3:

She wanted to sing in a choir. He wanted to sing in a choir.

Both of __________.

  1. Both she and he wanted to sing in a choir.
  2. Both of them wanted to sing in a choir.
  3. Both of him and her wanted to sing in a choir.
  4. Both of them are singing in a choir.

Answer:

(2) Both of them wanted to sing in a choir.

Explanation:

So, whenever we use synthesis and transformation for combining sentences, we need to retain the information provided in the question and should not remove information unnecessarily. In this question, it is mentioned that there is a girl and a boy. However, no matter how you try, "Both of" does not allow you to specify. So, the correct answer to this question is Option (2) - Both of them wanted to sing in a choir.

Point To Remember

Sometimes there is more than one answer. And in your own writing, there can be several ways to express the same thing.

Question 4:

Jane can play the guitar. Jane can play the flute.

Choose the option that is grammatically incorrect.

  1. Jane can play both the flute and the guitar.
  2. Jane can play the flute and the guitar.
  3. Jane can play not only the guitar but also the flute.
  4. Jane can play the guitar but not only the flute.

Answer:

(4) Jane can play the guitar but not only the flute.

Explanation:

The correct answer to this question is Option (4) - Jane can play the guitar but not only the flute. The usage of "not only" is completely incorrect here.

Question 5:

This is an old building. It was built in 1825.

__________ since __________.

Choose the correct option.

  1. This old building has been here since 1825.
  2. This old building is here since 1825.
  3. This old building was here since 1825.
  4. This old building was built in 1825.

Answer:

(1) This old building has been here since 1825.

Explanation:

The correct answer to this question is Option (1) - This old building has been here since 1825. "Has been" means that it started in the past, but it continues to this point in time. So, that old building was built in the past, but still exists in the present.
