  1. Subtraction without renaming
  2. Subtraction with renaming

Topic Recap:

Subtraction within 100 without renaming

Example:

Ricky has 68 books. He donated 33 books. How many books did he have left?

Solution:

\(68 - 33 = 35 \)

Answer:

35 books

Question 1:

Fill in the blanks with the correct answer.

\(75 - 21 =\) __________

  1. 44
  2. 54
  3. 56
  4. 96

Answer:

(2) 54

1. Subtraction without renaming

Example:

There are 837 students staying in a school hostel. 315 of them are girls. How many boys are there staying in the school hostel?

Solution:

\(837 - 315 = 522\)

Answer:

522 boys

Question 1:

Fill in the blank with the correct answer:

\(697 - 281 =\) __________

  1. 416
  2. 418
  3. 466
  4. 479

Solution:

Answer:

(1) 416

Question 2:

The difference between 753 and 303 is __________.

  1. 450
  2. 453
  3. 550
  4. 553

Solution:

\(753 - 303 = 450\)

Answer:

(1) 450

Topic Recap:

Subtraction within 100 with renaming

Example:

A florist had 100 stalks of flowers. She sold 63 stalks of flowers. How many stalks of flowers is she left with?

Solution:

\(100 - 63 = 37  \)

Answer:

37 stalks

Question 1:

Fill in the blank with the correct answer:

\(72 - 57 =\) __________

  1. 14
  2. 15
  3. 24
  4. 25

Solution:

Answer:

(2) 15

2. Subtraction within 1000 with renaming

Example:

A factory had to manufacture 1000 toys in 2 days. On the first day, 609 toys were manufactured. How many toys were manufactured on the second day?

Solution:

\(1000 - 609 = 391\)

Answer:

391

Question 1:

Fill in the blank with the correct answer:

\(644 - 589 =\) __________

  1. 55
  2. 65
  3. 145
  4. 155

Solution:

Answer:

(1) 55

Question 2:

Fill in the blank with the correct answer:

\(788 - 298 =\) __________ tens

  1. 49
  2. 51
  3. 490
  4. 510

Solution:

\(788 - 298 = 490\)

\(490 = 49\) tens

Answer:

(1) 49

Question 3:

Fill in the blank with the correct answer:

\(10\) hundreds \(- \;45\) tens \(=\) __________

  1. 35
  2. 55
  3. 350
  4. 550

Solution:

\(10\) hundreds \(- \;45\) tens

\(\begin{align} &= 1000 - 450 \\[2ex] &= 550 \end{align}\)

Answer:

(4) 550

Question 4:

Subtract 27 tens from 702.

  1. 342
  2. 432
  3. 675
  4. 702

Solution:

\(702 - 27\) tens

\(\begin{align} &= 702 - 270\\[2ex] &= 432 \end{align}\)

Answer:

(2) 432

Question 5:

Fill in the missing digit below:

  1. 5
  2. 2
  3. 6
  4. 4

Solution:

In the tens place, 8 tens cannot be subtracted from 2 tens. Therefore, we will have to regroup.

So, 1 hundred 2 tens \(=\) 12 tens.

12 tens - 8 tens \(=\) 4 tens

In the hundreds place, by working backwards,

3 hundreds \(+\) 1 hundred \(=\) 4 hundreds.

4 hundreds \(+\) 1 hundred \(=\) 5 hundreds.

Answer:

(1) 5

Question 6:

Look at the digits below. Use the digits to make the greatest and the smallest 3-digit numbers. What is the difference between the two numbers formed?

  1. 396
  2. 404
  3. 406
  4. 496

Solution:

The greatest 3-digit number that can be formed is 975.

The smallest 3-digit number that can be formed is 579.

Difference between the numbers

\(\begin{align} &= 975 −  579\\[2ex] &= 396 \end{align}\)

Answer:

(1) 396

Question 7:

What is the value of              ?

  1. 412
  2. 900
  3. 910
  4. 1000

Solution:

Value of the

\(\begin{align} &= 493 - 199\\[2ex]  &= 294 \end{align}\)

Value of the

\(\begin{align} &= 294 + 706\\[2ex] &= 1000   \end{align} \)

Answer:

(4) 1000
