All about AEIS, difficulty level, and how to score higher marks
Admission Exercise for International Students, or AEIS, is a national exam conducted by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. This exam is usually held in September or October for students who want to enrol in any of the Singapore Public Schools for the following academic year.
Update: Please note that for students who are applying for admission to primary school, the AEIS and S-AEIS assessments no longer include an English component. Therefore, students are required to take the Cambridge Education Qualifications (CEQ) before they can register for the AEIS/S-AEIS. Currently, both paper-based and computer-based CEQ test scores can be submitted during the registration process. We have mentioned the cut-offs marks for each level in this article.
Who is eligible to sit for the AEIS?
Singapore Public Schools require all international students (who are not Singapore citizens or PR) to pass the AEIS in order to be considered for admission.
The test is only required for students planning to enrol in a public school. There is no need to take this test if your child is applying to a private school.
What’s the difference between Singapore's public and private schools?
There are two main differences between public and private schools in Singapore:
1. Curriculum
Public schools follow the internationally acclaimed Singapore curriculum developed by the MOE (Ministry of Education, Singapore).
Private schools, on the other hand, follow their own curriculum. So, parents are advised to research the schools' curriculum and weigh the pros and cons before choosing the best school for their children.
2. Fees
Singapore's public schools are more affordable than private schools.
How do you register your child for AEIS?
- Take the Cambridge Education Test (CET) within 12 months of the date of the AEIS exam. This means that if your child is going to sit for the AEIS in September 2023 and you are planning to submit the application in July 2023, your child should take the CET after August 2022.
- Create an account on the candidate portal here. You will be asked to provide the following details while creating the account, so please keep the information handy:
- Applicant's full name
- Applicant’s identification number (passport number or FIN number)
- A valid email address
- A local or overseas contact number of the applicant
- A local or overseas contact number of next of kin.
Points to note: Each candidate should create only one account, and once the details are filled in, they should not be amended as MOE will use the details you enter to register your child for the AEIS test.
4. Pay the registration fee to register for the test.
It's a good idea to enrol your kid as soon as the registration deadline is made public. The reason for this is that there are only a certain number of seats available, and registrations end when all of the seats are taken.
AEIS difficulty level
Many parents often wonder what the difficulty level of the AIES is as they want to help their child prepare for the test.
From the past results, the passing rate for this test is around 25%, which means that many international students who take this test find it difficult to answer all of the questions correctly.
