How to prepare for your biology practical exam

1. Understand the theory

It is important to understand the theoretical background behind each experiment, as this will help you be more conscious of what’s happening in the lab. O-level Biology practicals involve a wide range of topics. Familiarising yourself with the relevant concepts will give you an edge when you are trying to design experiments or interpret results. Make sure to read the textbooks and other resources available and ask your teacher any questions that come up during your study. It is also useful to pay close attention when conducting experiments in class; take notes on mistakes made by you or others so you can prevent them from happening again, especially during your O-levels.

2. Make use of diagrams

Studying from diagrams enhances your comprehension and retention of study material. They break down complex concepts into simpler components and reveal connections among various elements. Additionally, diagrams offer a convenient reference point for revision. Finally, being well-acquainted with diagrams makes it easier to excel in the spotting section and score higher.

2. Visualise each step of the experiment

Once you've read the instructions, try to understand them. What are the steps you need to follow? What tools or materials do you require? This step helps you visualise how the experiment will unfold. And by understanding how the experiment should unfold, you mentally prepare yourself for each stage and ensure that you are in sync with the intended process.

3. Identify what could go wrong

Another crucial aspect of reading and understanding instructions is the ability to anticipate and prevent potential errors. This proactive approach allows you to identify any areas where mistakes could occur or variables that might impact the experiment's outcomes. In turn, this early recognition enables you to plan and take precautions to mitigate these risks effectively. 

4. Note each step of the experiment

It is important to pay attention to the details of each experiment. Make sure to note down all steps carefully and accurately as any mistakes could decrease your score. Double check steps after you have logged them down in order to ensure that you have captured the right information. If you're expected to make a drawing, include clear details. For example, if you're drawing a fruit include labels like vascular bundles, the outer layer, seeds, and other notable features. Additionally, be sure to indicate the magnification by calculating the size of your drawing (measure from the end of the drawing) relative to the actual specimen size using a ruler. This ensures your work is precise and well-documented.

5. Create a table to record the data

When you're faced with a question that asks you to record your experiment's results, it's a great idea to start by creating a table before you actually start the experiment. This makes it much easier to organise and keep track of your data for later use. Look out for important instructions like "Start the stopwatch immediately after placing...". Instructions like these mean you should make an initial record of the measured variable in the table along with the new data.
