Guess The Lyrics
In today’s lesson, we will be learning how to figure out the lyrics of songs. Usually, a song is trying to tell you something: it could be a story or message. At the same time, there is an element of rhyme and rhythm. The questions will be based on some popular songs and we will look at the vocabulary used.
English Concept - Part 1
Hint 1: Even if you don’t know the song, look at what might rhyme or fit.
Practice Question
Question 1:
Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back __________.
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door.
- anyone
- anymore
- anybody
- anyway
Answer:
(2) anymore
Explanation:
To guess the correct answer to this question, think of the rhyme. Each line of the song ends with an ‘O’ sound. The correct answer to this question, which sounds similar to the other lines, is option (2) - anymore.
Hint 2: The character has the power to create ice and snow.
Question 2:
One of the lines is:
“My power flurries through the air into the ground”
What does “flurry” mean?
- A rabbit with short hair and floppy ears.
- A type of delicious ice cream.
- A small, flurry creature
- A small, swirling group of things
Answer:
(4) A small, swirling group of things
Explanation:
The correct answer to this question is option (4) - “A small, swirling group of things”. This option describes snowflakes flying through the air. Snowflakes are the small swirling group of things that fly through the air, like in a snowstorm.
Hint 3: Look for alternative rhymes.
Question 3:
I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any __________
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
- mirror
- father
- clearer
- obvious
Answer:
(3) clearer
Explanation:
To find out the correct answer to this question, we should look at the alternate lines for the correct rhyme. So, we need to see what rhymes with mirror. Except “obvious”, all the other options rhyme with mirror. This eliminates the last option. Out of the rest, the first 2 options don't make any sense if added to the end of the third line. The correct answer to this question is thus option (3) - clearer.
English Concept - Part 2
Here are some older songs. Remember to use the rhymes and other lines to figure out what goes in the blanks.
- Sometimes it helps to try out all the options.
- Read them out loud, and the correct answer might become obvious.
- If it sounds weird, it’s probably wrong.
Practice Questions
Question 1:
So now we’re flying we’re free
We’re free before the thunderstorm
On towards the wilderness
Our quest ______________.
- carries on
- will stop
- to find the magic ring will continue for a few more days
- is difficult
Answer:
(1) carries on
Explanation:
This question has an irregular rhyme. The lines of the song have a similar sound, but all the lines don’t rhyme. Taking a hint from the third line, it clearly states that we are going toward the wilderness, i.e. going on a journey and moving forward. Not only this, there is also an alternate rhyme between the 2nd and the last line. The correct answer to this question is option (1) - carries on.
