The first seven days: navigating the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise

Your child's PSLE score and AL banding will determine their initial Posting Group, which maps to the starting subject levels they can take. We encourage you to use your six choices wisely by preparing a balanced list of aspirational, realistic and safe schools. If your child does not secure a place in any of their six choices, they will be posted to a nearby school with available vacancies that match their score and Posting Group. For students with confirmed offers through the Direct School Admission exercise, this posting step is already settled. What is Full Subject-Based Banding? The end of streaming

We encourage you to forget the traditional divisions of Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams. The Ministry of Education Full Subject-Based Banding framework has dismantled that rigid structure. As of 2024, all mainstream secondary schools practise full subject-based banding.

This means students are no longer confined to a single academic stream. Instead, they take individual subjects at different levels, G1, G2 or G3, based on their personal strengths and PSLE performance. Understanding posting groups and subject levels

We understand that the transition from primary school to secondary school is a significant milestone for your child. Under the Full Subject-Based Banding system, the traditional Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams are replaced by Posting Groups and subject levels. This structure provides three main levels of study for each subject:

  • G3 (General 3): Corresponds to the former Express stream level.
  • G2 (General 2): Corresponds to the former Normal (Academic) stream level.
  • G1 (General 1): Corresponds to the former Normal (Technical) stream level.

This flexibility is the core of the new subject banding system. We observe that a student who is strong in Mathematics and Science can take these subjects at the G3 level, while taking English at the G2 level if that suits their learning pace better. We believe every child is capable of growing at their own pace and they can also move up to a higher level later if they meet the school's criteria for advancement, making their educational path much more dynamic.

What should my child do between PSLE and January?

We understand that many parents are caught off guard by the steep academic climb in secondary 1. The curriculum is not just harder, it is fundamentally different. To help your child stay on track, we encourage you to prepare for these key subject shifts during this period:

1. Mathematics

In primary school, Mathematics focuses on concrete problem sums, heuristics, fractions and percentages. In secondary 1, the subject introduces abstract concepts like algebra, negative numbers and geometric proofs. We observe that the pace is significantly faster and building a strong foundation early will help your child navigate this change with confidence.

2. Science

While primary school Science is taught as a single, integrated subject focusing on broad themes like energy and life cycles, secondary 1 Science branches into specialised disciplines: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 3. English
