The ultimate PSLE Science resource: Everything you need to know for 2024

PSLE Science is no joke! The examiners don't just want your kids to memorise facts like a parrot, they actually want them to understand the concepts. And this is great, as these are the skills that our children will need to succeed in their careers.

But let's face it, even us adults can get stumped by some of the questions that are asked in this exam. That's why in this article, we're going to give you the lowdown on what to expect from the PSLE Science 2024 syllabus, some tips and tricks to help your child ace the exam, and we'll even throw in some free resources to make studying a little more bearable.

So buckle up, put on your lab coats, and get ready to take on the challenge of PSLE Science.

Brief overview of the PSLE Science curriculum 2024

PSLE Science is chock-full of opportunities to develop analytical and problem-solving skills that are so in demand in today's world. The Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore knows that the students come from different backgrounds, interests, and learning abilities so the curriculum ensures that all children are equipped with basic scientific knowledge, and at the same time, those who have an inclination towards Science can build a robust foundation that they will need to pursue STEM careers in future.

The overall curriculum is designed around 3 "INs":

  1. Inspired by Science: Where students explore the Science behind everyday things. This really challenges their innate curiosity.
  2. Inquire like Scientists: Students are encouraged to learn the art of scientific inquiry. They learn how to partake in scientific experiments, what to do when there is insufficient data, and how to weigh alternatives and make decisions, among other things.
  3. Innovate using Science: Students learn how to apply the concepts to solve real-world problems, a skill that ensures success for anyone who wants to be in STEM.

Now that we know the thought behind the curriculum, let's dive into the topics that will be covered in the 2024 PSLE Science exam, shall we?

PSLE Science syllabus 2024

Students will be expected to learn about these 5 core themes:

  1. Diversity

  1. Encourage active learning

Active learning involves engaging your child in the learning process. The idea is that your child is not a passive entity who takes in what's being taught but actively engages with the content. The main benefit of this type of learning is that children understand and retain all of the information.

Here are some ways that active learning can be used when studying:

  • Encourage them to ask questions and seek clarification on concepts that they don't understand.
  • Ask them to teach you what they have learnt.
  1. Use visual aids

Visual aids such as diagrams, charts, and videos can help your child understand complex scientific concepts. Encourage them to use visual aids when studying or revising for Science. You can also create visual aids together, which can be a fun and interactive way to learn. Here's a brief example of how Geniebook Science teachers use visual aids in their live and recorded classes to engage the students and ensure that they thoroughly understand the topic in question.

  1. Create a positive learning environment

Creating a positive learning environment at home can make a significant difference in your child's learning and academic performance. Ensure that your child has a designated study space that is quiet, well-lit, and free from distractions. Encourage them to take breaks when needed and provide healthy snacks to keep them energised.

  1. Review past mistakes

Encourage your child to review their past mistakes and learn from them. This can help them to identify areas that they need to improve and develop strategies to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

  1. Use mind maps

Mind maps are a useful tool for organising and summarising information. Encourage your child to create mind maps when studying or revising for Science. This can help them to visualise the relationships between different concepts and remember key information more easily.
