Primary 3

Overview

When in Primary 3, students are introduced to formal examinations, weighted assessments, and Science as an additional compulsory subject. To ensure that they are well-adjusted to the increased curriculum demands, there’ll be no mid-year examinations. However, students will be assessed through weighted assessments and SA2 examination, which takes place at the end of the year. Meanwhile, those who exhibit strong ability and aptitude in the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) may choose to take up Higher Mother Tongue Language as an additional subject. On top of that, students who perform beyond expectations may be identified for the Gifted Education Programme (GEP), which comprises an enriched curriculum designed to foster higher-level thinking and intellectual depth.

English

When in Primary 3, students learn to showcase their ability to synthesise key themes and ideas through writing and group discussions. More importantly, they are encouraged to construct sentences using simple punctuation and consider the role of vocabulary, conjunctions, connectives, and openers in all written tasks to help further develop their writing skills. Descriptive writing techniques are also introduced at this point to help students find the right words to describe a character and drive a plot forward. To improve their reading capability, students are given opportunities to practice reading aloud in class or small groups with the goal of developing their confidence, fluency, and expression.

Maths

The Primary 3 Mathematics syllabus can be broadly divided into 3 categories: Numbers and Algebra, Measurements and Geometry, and Statistics. Building on the foundation of Primary 1 and 2, students can expect to work with a wider range of numbers (up to 10,000) and solve more complex quantifiable problems that require a higher level of critical thinking. Some of the new topics introduced in Primary 3 include angles, area and perimeter, perpendicular and parallel lines, and bar graphs.

Science

At Primary 3, students are introduced to the MOE’s Primary Science Syllabus which serves to inspire curiosity by connecting scientific concepts and themes to everyday life. The syllabus is organised into Lower Block (Primary 3 & 4) and Upper Block (Primary 5 & 6), as well as five major themes: Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Energy, and Interactions. As one embarks on the journey of scientific inquiry, students can expect to pick up valuable observation, reasoning, and critical thinking skills that form the foundation on which they formulate hypotheses, analyse patterns, and solve day-to-day challenges with creative solutions. The Primary 3 and 4 Science syllabus covers a range of topics such as the diversity of living and non-living things, life cycles of plants and animals, plant parts and functions, the human digestive systems, interaction of forces, and various energy forms and their uses, and so on.
